PGA $10,000+ WGC FEDEX ST JUDE INVITATIONAL
A star-studded field and a very friendly salary cap combine to offer coaches a great variety of build strategies at TPC Southwind this week in Memphis.
No cut’s here at TPC Southwind this week so coaches can select a little more on ceiling than floor and really, there are few ceiling’s like DJ’s.
Normally don’t like to take the defending champ but DJ just seems to be so close to going from also-ran to lapping the field, I’m going to make an exception this time.
This is an awesome event and really any combination of six golfers will look great on paper, just remember that the further down you go, the more (generally speaking) win equity you forfeit which makes your top end selections really have to deliver.
Pick your six golfers to share in $10,000!
Dustin Johnson ($23,100): Smashed the field here last year by five shots and at his best is an absolute dfs beast. It’s a course he likes which brings in all the bonuses, two eagle-able par 5’s and best of all, he should have pretty good ownership with Brooks right there with him price wise and so many big names cheaper than him.
Patrick Cantlay ($18,450): In terms of pure statistics Cantlay is the play this week. Ranked in the top 10 in every key statistic needed for TPC Southwind, Cantlay will go really under the radar this week but his win equity is right up there with guys 5k more expensive. Can sometimes seem a ‘boring’ selection but his approach game and putting make him a really safe premium selection and there will be nothing boring about him cracking the dfs ton here.
Adam Scott ($16,830): Ultimate recency bias play with Scotty burning over a third of the field last week at The Open with an uncharacteristic missed cut. Just going to assume that never happened and assess on form prior which was stellar. Bermuda is not his best putting surface which is the only knock because his tee to green game is elite.
Patrick Reed ($15,180): One of two solid POD selections in this team which is what coaches will need to find in a no-cut event. Reed’s Open last week was solid and he seems to be rounding into some pretty consistent form with 2 top 10’s in his last 3 starts as well as that 23rd at the 3M Open. At this price, a top 20 is all we’re looking for really, but if he gets hot with the putter he can contend at likely sub 10% ownership.
New to PGA but love DFS? Jump in the 3-Ball!
Andrew Putnam ($13,670): Speaking of POD play, people don’t even know what this guy looks like let alone how he hits a ball. Putnam has made his last 6 cuts and was 2nd here last year to DJ. I doubt he will even be 2% owned.
Rafael Cabrera-Bello ($12,590): Last man in is Rafa who had a shocking Open but prior to that he was on fantasy fire so, like Scott, we are forgetting last-start and trusting the form prior returns swiftly in an event where he doesnt have to make a cut to see the weekend. Can go low.
