Here is a team you may consider for the AFL $20,000+ Sunday competition
Forward
Tim Taranto ($7,750)
While there is a hell of a lot of proven talent out there on Sunday, this man is one for the future. The #2 selection in last year’s draft showed fantastic signs throughout the JLT Community Series, averaging 76 Draftstars points at .91 points per minute. At his price he is a potential bargain with Stephen Coniglio’s injury meaning he should spend more time at the coalface. The kid is all class, and expect that to be no different for his AFL debut on Sunday.
Cam McCarthy ($6,400)
Another debut, of sorts. Personally, I think Cam McCarthy’s potential for the upcoming season has been overstated, but he is a cheap option for what he can deliver. ‘The Great McCarthy’ (one for you Specky Magee fans) averaged just 50 Draftstars points in his last full season, which wouldn’t really cut the mustard. However, he showed his goalkicking talents in last JLT game, scoring 93 points from six goals. He also posted totals of 21 and 47 though. A risk vs reward selection, but I think he may snag a few sausage rolls against a weaker Geelong defence than we’ve seen in recent years.
Midfield
Patrick Dangerfield ($16,500)
We’ve gone with some cheap options in the forward line, now it is time to bulk up in the midfield. The crème de la crème. The man who doesn’t mind a dip in the surf with a suit on; Patrick Dangerfield. Danger has gone bananas in his last two games against the Dockers, amassing Draftstars totals of 145 in 2015 and 130 in 2016. Last year Dangerfield kicked four and had 30 disposals against them in the West, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he replicated these efforts. Food for thought: he scored 137 in Round 1 last year.
Nat Fyfe ($14,300)
In his last game against Danger in 2015 the two battled head-to-head, with Fyfe winning the Draftstars points battle scoring a monster 150 points. Expect something similar to happen again. Nat Fyfe is a star, and he will be looking to start 2017 with a bang. He scored 115 in his last match against the Cats back in 2015, and finished the JLT with a mammoth 147 against Carlton. Fyfe attended 71% of centre bounces during the pre-season, yet another sign that the newly appointed Dockers skipper will be back to his best.
Sam Mitchell ($14,400)
We are splashing some more cash in the midfield but for good reason; Sam Mitchell is simply a ball-magnet. The 34-year-old showed he has lost none of his touch during the JLT series, averaging 101 Draftstars points per game – including a 123-point effort in the last match. Coming up against a lacklustre North Melbourne lineup, Mitchell will have a field day on the ball, gathering possessions at will. The only thing stopping Mitchell from scoring a Draftstars ton is if he becomes ill due to leather poisoning.
George Horlin-Smith ($7,550)
Having fallen off the face of the Earth in 2016, Horlin-Smith has been named on the ball against the Dockers. While I doubt he will be playing there all game, GHS presents some value considering he averaged 64 Draftstars points in 2014 – his last full season. GHS was also in the Cats’ top five points scorers during the JLT, averaging 87 points. He will be hungry to keep his spot in the Geelong side, so he looms as a Draftstars bargain.
Defence
Heath Shaw ($14,450)
The GWS defensive general, Heath Shaw is another fairly expensive option who I expect to go large on the weekend. In hot conditions on Sunday (34 degrees forecast for Adelaide) his pale skin may burn a touch, but it will be prime kicking conditions for the Giants’ designated kicker out of defence. Shaw averaged 21 kicks last season – equivalent to 63 Draftstars points – so that along with his marks and other statistics should get him to a formidable total. Scored a casual 146 points in his last JLT matchup.
Curtly Hampton ($6,400)
Like Horlin-Smith, this bloke has also fallen off the face of the Earth to a degree. However, the former Giant is back in Crows colours after injury and form kept him out of the senior line-up in 2016. Hampton has been spending extended stints in the midfield, even recording the most centre bounce attendances in their second JLT match. With injuries to Scott Thompson and Brad Crouch, Hampton should receive adequate midfield time on the weekend and serve as some value for our sides.
Ruck
Aaron Sandilands ($12,000)
The biggest man in the game is back and will be up against Rhys Stanley and Zac Smith. Sandilands should have no trouble racking up hitouts on the weekend, and I predict he will get over 40 hitouts. (provided he doesn’t get injured, touch wood!). Considering that is 40 Draftstars points without even registering a disposal, that is pretty darn solid. Averaged .85 points per minute during the JLT where he was just getting warmed up.
Todd Goldstein against Nathan Vardy is not a bad shout either, but I preferred to stack my midfield instead.
