The Late Cut: BBL $5k+ Stars v Sixers

image-adapt-1663-medium

The final regular season match of BBL06 sees the Melbourne Stars play host to the Sydney Sixers. This match will have huge finals implication. The winner will be guaranteed a spot in the top four and possibly a home final depending on other results. The loser will have to hope that other results have gone their way, but it is most likely that if the Sixers lose they will not play finals due to their poor Net Run Rate. Draftstars will be running a $5,000 game for this match, with $1,000 going to first place.

Here is a team you may consider for the BBL $5k+ Stars v Sixers competition:

Wicketkeeper

Seb Gotch ($8,000)

Called up to replace Handscomb, Gotch shone in his last match, scoring 30 off 25 in a low scoring match. Whilst other batsmen around him struggle to play freely, Gotch looked at ease, showing off his full array of strokes including an impressive cut shot. Gotch comes into bat at number 4, which is a great time to bat in T20 matches, it allows batsmen to get set before accelerating at the end of the innings. He also looked handy with the gloves, at his salary, he is the clear pick for the wicket keeping position.

Batsmen

Kevin Pietersen ($17,450)

Pietersen can only improve from his last game, where he scored zero points after being trapped LBW first ball. Pietersen rarely has two poor games in a row and he will be looking to lead the Stars to a home final. Even with the score of zero, Pietersen averages well over 50 DS points, which is really good for batsmen.

Nic Maddinson ($10,350)

Maddinson had just started to find a bit of form until his last match where he was dismissed cheaply. The Sixers were extremely poor, being restricted to a total of 99 runs. They all need to bounce back, but will look to their marquee players to lead from the front. Maddinson needs to get his confidence up and lead the team to victory if they are do play finals. Maddinson has a great record in finals, which I’m sure he would like to add to, but they need to win to get there.

Bowlers

Scott Boland ($14,750)

Boland has been super consistent for the Stars throughout BBL06. He has picked up at least one wicket in his last six matches, taking a total off 11. Whilst he has been reasonably expensive going at an economy rate of 8.4 runs per over, he bowls in the power play and at the death, when batsmen are at their most attacking. Boland can continue his good form against a batting lineup that crumble in their last match.

Jackson Bird ($12,100)

After securing his place in the test squad for the Indian tour, Bird will be looking to leave in good form. He only has one wicket in his two BBL appearances, but he’s bowling to a Stars top order who were 2/1 at one stage in their last match. Bird has the quality to rip through the Stars lineup, he will need to stand up if the Sixers want to play finals.

Allrounder

Sean Abbott ($15,750)

Unless something special happens in the early match of the double header, Abbott will finish the regular season as the competition’s leading wicket taker. He has taken 15 wickets so far in his seven matches and can consider himself quite unlucky not to be picked in the ODI team, considering that Marcus Stoinis has secured a call up. Abbott has not excelled with the bat so far in BBL06, but he can definitely turn it around in this match, if required.

Flex

Adam Zampa ($17,250)

Zampa was bowling brilliantly for the Stars earlier in the tournament, which resulted in him getting a call up for the national team. Whilst he did not get a game, it still was a reward for his good work in BBL06. Zampa’s last three BBL matches have seen him take 4 wickets at an economy rate of 4.66. That is elite in this competition. Zampa can do it again on the wide expanses of the MCG against a shaky batting lineup. With the likelihood of a lot of wickets, it is the correct play to pick a bowler in your flex position.
