The Late Cut: BBL $8k+ Stars v Strikers

mcg-stars

The Big Bash rolls on to Melbourne tonight, with the Stars taking on the Adelaide Strikers. The Stars have been gutted by the ODI squad being called up, losing Zampa, Maxwell and Faulkner, the Strikers have also lost a couple of key players in Stanlake and Head as well as losing Jordan to injury. Draftstars will be running an $8,000 with $1,600 going to first place.

Here is a team you may consider for the BBL $8k+ Stars v Strikers competition:

Wicketkeeper

Peter Handscomb ($16,700)

I have no idea how Handscomb missed a spot in the ODI squad. In his four test matches so far, Handscomb has scored two centuries and two fifties and he has demonstrated an ability to score runs at a quick rate. Apart from Smith he has had the best summer in Australia. Australia’s loss is the Stars’ gain and he will slot into the middle order here beautifully. In BBL05 he scored 141 runs at an average of 28.2. He will probably bat at number four, replacing Maxwell, as well as take the gloves.

Batsmen

Brad Hodge ($14,250)

Hodge just continues to make runs. He now has five innings in BBL06 with his lowest score being 27, he is scoring the runs at a very healthy strike rate of 143. In this match, Hodge comes up against his old side where he played during BBL02 and BBL03. He is averaging over 65 DS points per game and with the loss of Travis Head, Hodge will come in at 3 and have a good opportunity to get a big score.

Rob Quiney ($14,500)

In his two matches so far in BBL06, Quiney has shown what a brilliant cricketer he is, scoring 75 and 51. He is averaging over 100 DS points, which is an incredible feat. He has been opening the batting alongside Luke Wright, getting the Stars off to quick starts whenever he plays. The Stars have won two matches so far in BBL06 and they have both occurred with Quiney at the top of the order. Quiney will look to get the stars off to another quick start against the depleted Strikers bowling attack.

Bowlers

Ish Sodhi ($11,500)

The Kiwi leggie has been brought into the squad to replace the injured Chris Jordan. Sodhi is a good replacement because the Strikers have been missing a quality spin option. They had been using Travis Head and Liam O’Connor, but Head is away with the national team and teams have worked out O’Connor does not spin the ball. Sodhi’s experience will be valuable for the Strikers and he will need to bowl extremely well if the Strikers are to have any chance.

Scott Boland ($13,750)

Boland has started to hit a bit of form, picking up two wickets in his last match against the Renegades. Boland usually bowls at the death, so he can be a bit expensive, but he also is a great wicket taking threat. The Stars have lost two of their better bowling options in Zampa and Faulkner, so extra responsibility will be placed on the shoulders of Boland.

Allrounder

Marcus Stoinis ($19,250)

It is fair to say that Stoinis has been fairly disappointing so far in BBL06. He has lost his spot at the top of the order and he has not been bowling as much as he would have liked. The Stars have lost three bowling options to the national team, so Stoinis should be bowling more overs in this match. This should see a healthy bump in Stoinis’ score for this match.

Flex

Jake Lehmann ($9,500)

Lehmann is another player who would not be happy with how he has started so far in BBL06. He has not had the opportunity to score runs, only facing 10 balls in three matches. Lehmann will most likely be promoted up the order with the loss of Travis Head and he may also be required to bowl an over or two of his left arm orthodox. At a salary of $9,500, he is definitely worth a punt.
