Looking to bolster your own line-up? Here’s a few best buys to consider.

Defenders

Sam Docherty – Carlton – $16,500

Until Docherty gives us a reason not to pick him, then he should be the No.1 priority each round, despite his lofty price. He has scored more points in first quarters than any other player on the AFL, recording 17 more than anyone else. Docherty scored a season-high 62 points in the opening term against Adelaide on the weekend.

Rory Laird – Adelaide Crows – $13,050

With only one score of 90+ points in his past five games, Laird has been well below his best. He averages 106 points at Adelaide Oval though, ranked third at the Crows, and should get back among the points on Friday night. Laird continues to lead the AFL for handball-receives, recording 13 more than any other player.

Defender/Midfielder

Zak Jones – Sydney Swans – $10,950

Jones averages more disposals at the SCG than any other venue in the AFL. He ranks sixth at Sydney for points per game there this season, posting 85+ in five of six games. He could only manage 54 points in his last game there in Round 12, but prior to that he pumped out 119 and 101 points in that order.

Midfielders

Zach Merrett – Essendon – $15,650

With only two sub 100-point scores for the year, expect Merrett to bounce back in strong fashion this Saturday. After scoring 97 points against Carlton in Round 3, he followed that up with 134 the following week. Merrett scored 137 points when he last faced Collingwood in Round 5.

Tom Rockliff – Brisbane Lions – $15,550

Since returning from a shoulder injury, Rockliff has averaged just 88 points, well down from 129 pre-injury. You can’t keep a quality player down for too long, which is why he stands out in Draftstars this week. Rockliff finished with 27 disposals and 123 points when he last faced Geelong at the Gabba in 2016.

Dan Hannebery – Sydney Swans – $13,300

Hannebery was out of sorts last round, finishing with a season-low 16 disposals. No Sydney player has scored more points against Gold Coast since 2011 though – recording 63 more than anyone else. At the SCG alone, he has scored 102 and 117 from the two matches between the sides.

Midfielder/Forward

Jordan De Goey – Collingwood – $11,800

De Goey’s past month has been encouraging. Last round against the Hawks he was one of very few winners for the Magpies, scoring 109 points from a career-high 32 disposals. Only Adam Treloar (29) attended more centre bounces than De Goey’s 28 for Collingwood, which suggests he could continue to play predominantly as a midfielder.

Forwards

Michael Walters – Fremantle – $13,700

Walters is currently in career-best form, averaging 27 disposals across his past three games, ranked second in the AFL among all forwards. His average of three goals is only bettered by Josh Jenkins, Jonathon Patton and Cale Hooker. Walters has posted scores of 111, 122 and 145 points in these games.

Jack Billings – St Kilda – $13,450

Billings’ five highest scores for the season have all been at Etihad Stadium, recording 111, 113, 116, 119 and 151 points, and as a result brings him into the Draftstars mix as the Saints host Richmond at Etihad Stadium this round. Billings has a three-round average of 106 points.

Rucks

Max Gawn – Melbourne – $12,050

Considering there were only nine secondary stoppages between Melbourne and Sydney on the weekend (fewest in any match for the round) – Gawn’s score of 81 points was a decent haul. He faces Carlton this Sunday, a side he recorded 95 points against when it last met in Round 2.
