the late cut: BBL $15k+ Hurricanes v Stars
Tournament favorites, the Melbourne Stars kick off their BBL06 campaign with an away match against the Hobart Hurricanes. Hobart defied expectation as they dismantled the Sydney Sixers in their last game, with strong performances from most of their players. The Melbourne Stars have retained the exact same squad from BBL05, where they ended up the bridesmaids, losing the Grand Final to the Thunder. Draftstars will be running a $15,000 game for this match, with a huge $3,000 going to first place.

wicketkeeper
Tim Paine ($16,350)
Paine is undoubtedly one of the forgotten men of Australian cricket. He was one of the best up and coming wicketkeeper/batsmen in the country, playing four test matches for Australia before succumbing to injury. Paine opened his account for BBL06 with a dominant 63 off 45 balls, picking up Man of the Match honours. There is no reason why he cannot replicate this performance against the Stars.
Batsmen
Kevin Pietersen ($17,450)
KP was in scintillating form for the Stars in BBL05, especially towards the back end of the tournament. He averaged over 40 runs at a staggering strike rate of 159. He dominated most bowling attacks with his typical elegance. Pietersen is one of the biggest name in the Big Bash who will look to put in a big performance on Boxing Day, when all eyes are on him.
Luke Wright ($14,250)
The English import is back for yet another Big Bash and will look to pick up where he left off last campaign. Wright dominated the back end of BBL05, finishing with an average of 35, including a blistering century in the Melbourne Derby. Wright is also an elite outfielder, so he has a chance to pop up with a catch or two.
Bowlers
Scott Boland ($15,400)
Boland was one of the most improved bowlers of BBL05, leading to a berth in the Australian ODI team. Boland took six wickets across four matches. Boland is a great death bowler and will be most likely be working in tandem with the best in the business, James Faulkner. This could mean that batsmen might take extra risks against Boland, increasing his chance of taking wickets.
Michael Beer ($12,000)
The crafty spinner, once tipped to be Australia’s next big thing, has come back again to play another season with the Stars. Beer is not a massive tuner of the ball, but he is exceptionally accurate, often utilised at the start of the innings to pinch a cheap over or two. Beer lead all Stars last season in economy rate, conceding a miserly 6.37 runs per over, as well as picking up six wickets. Hobart’s opening duo were overly aggressive at the start of their inning against Sydney, which could play into Beer’s favour as he attempts to outwit them.
allrounder
D’Arcy Short ($8,000)
Previously unknown, Short exploded onto the scene in his debut against Sydney, blasting 61 off 29 deliveries. Short showed that he is particularly strong over cover. He also picked up a wicket, finishing with 1/6 from his only over. Hopefully it was not a fluke and he can continue his form here. At only $8,000 he is well worth a punt.

Stuart Broad ($15,600)
It is fair to say that Broad is hardly a crowd favourite here in Australia, but he can win over the Hobart fans with a strong showing here. Broad will relish the extra pace and bounce here in Australia and he will no doubt be quite comfortable bowling to his English teammates Pietersen and Wright. Broad was okay against Sydney, but he was only just off a plane from India, look for him to improve off that performance.
