The Late Cut: BBL $7k+ Heat v Sixers
The second semi-final of BBL06 is being played tonight with the Brisbane Heat taking on the Sydney Sixers. The winner of tonight’s match goes on to play the Perth Scorchers after their convincing win last night. In their regular season meeting, the Sixers chased down the Heat’s total of 186 on the back of a superb 85 from Daniel Hughes. Interestingly enough, there have been five rematches so far in BBL06 (four regular season and one final) with the team that lost the first match winning all five rematches. Draftstars will be running a $7,000 game for this match, with $1,400 going to first place.
Here is a team you may consider for the BBL $7k+ Heat v Sixers competition:
Wicketkeeper
Brendon McCullum ($18,500)
The Heat’s skipper has been in tremendous touch right throughout BBL06, scoring 277 runs for the tournament at a strike rate of 171. McCullum has hit an incredible 16 sixes from seven matches, often setting the heat up for victory in the power play overs. McCullum’s aggressive style does have its risks, but it often pays off, he has five scores of over 40 DS points, including a high of 147.
Batsmen
Sam Heazlett ($12,250)
After coming into the heat lineup to replace the irreplaceable Chris Lynn, Heazlett is making a case to be adopted as a ‘Bash Step-Brother’. Heazlett is batting at a strike rate of 170, hitting a total of 75 runs in his three matches. Brisbane have made a habit of being super aggressive in the power play overs, meaning that if Heazlett gets going, he can rack up big scores quickly.
Nic Maddinson ($10,350)
It has been a really frustrating summer for Nic Maddinson. After being called up to the test team, he was dropped after three tests and struggled to find his feet in the Big Bash. However, Maddinson has a remarkable record in BBL finals, where he has scored 218 in his five finals, averaging 44 runs. If he can replicate that, he is well worth his salary of $10,350.
Bowlers
Mark Steketee ($13,750)
Steketee has been a revelation in BBL06 and would be clear favourite in any ‘Most Improved Player’ award. Steketee was close to the worst bowler of BBL05, he took 3 wickets at an economy rate of 11.2 in his four matches. Contrast that to this season where he has taken 13 wickets at an economy rate of 7.9. It is clear that McCullum has placed a lot of faith in him and there is no reason to go against him in this match.
Samuel Badree ($17,250)
Badree will slot straight back into the team after recovering from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since January 3rd. Badree was in good form before his injury, picking up four wickets in his previous three matches at a miserly economy rate of 6.33. Badree adds a controlled spin option for the Heat who complements the more aggressive Mitchell Swepson. Because of the Heat’s powerful batting lineup, the Sixers may have to take more risks against Badree, which could see him pick up a few wickets.
Allrounder
Sean Abbott ($15,750)
Abbott was the match winner in his last match against the Melbourne Stars. He took one wicket with the ball, to extend his lead at the top of the tournament wicket takers, but it was with the bat that Abbott shone, blasting 33 off 17 balls to secure a place in the finals for his team. Abbott has been in great form in BBL06, averaging a massive 80.8 DS points per game. Look for him to stand up with the bat and ball in this match.
Flex
Alex Ross ($9,650)
Alex “The Sweepologist” Ross has picked up a bit of form in the latter half of BBL06, scoring 101 runs in his last three matches. Ross often has the task of finishing the innings and is particularly effective against spin bowling, which is a strength of the Sixers. Ross will be coming in at number four, likely with a solid platform set by McCullum, Peirson and Heazlett, so he should be able to play himself in before launching late. Ross seems like a good value option for you flex position.
