Draftstars is running the first ever fantasy game for AFLW which means that when it comes to this game, we are all rookies. The game is subtly different to the men’s game, and being able to exploit these differences could be what shoots you to the top of the leaderboard. Here are a few tips for picking your AFLW team on Draftstars.

Spot the Difference

There are a number of differences between the men’s and women’s game. AFLW games tend to be lower scoring, more congested games that really open up late in games when the players get tired. Because so few goals are kicked in games, spending big on forwards who play the traditional role is not generally the best idea. Instead, look for forwards who spend time through the midfield.

Dual Position Threats

Quite a few of the players are assigned to multiple positions by Draftstars. The most common of these are midfield/forwards or midfield/defenders. Picking players who will get a run in the midfield that are listed as defenders or forwards is a great way to get your score up.

In and Under

There were 37% more stoppages in AFLW last season compared to the men’s game. However, the AFL have announced that there have been some changes designed to open up the game. How much effect will this have immediately? It is hard to say, but it is still fairly safe to assume that players who can tackle, as well as player who thrive in stoppages will be Draftstars gold. This includes picking the dominant ruck on the ground.

Rebounding Defenders

Whilst the quality of disposal in AFLW is rapidly improving, it is still a fair way off the men’s game. That means that there is a lot of opportunity for rebounding defenders to create turnovers and rack up a lot of stats. Find defender who are good intercepting marks and who can run off half back and you might just be at the top of the leaderboard.

Back Yourself

There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to AFLW fantasy, so if you have a hunch or a smokey or someone who you think will do well, go for it. Players who are lowly owned, but score well are one of the keys to success on Draftstars, so if you want to win big, you have to take a risk or two.
