Here is a team you may consider for the BBL $20k Thunder v Sixers Clear the Fence match competition
WICKETKEEPER
Brad Haddin ($14,000)
The 39-year-old will be a crucial part of the Sixers’ batting line-up this season, and he is clearly the best wicket-keeping option for this first contest. Haddin will bat somewhere in the top four, and will no doubt be looking to take on the Thunder from the outset. He was the team’s second best batsman during BBL|05, scoring two 50s and hitting nine sixes in the process, and it wouldn’t surprise to see him start well.
BATSMEN
Aiden Blizzard ($12,000)
Blizzard is a big-hitting T20 specialist who teams will need to keep an eye on. With Shane Watson injured, Blizzard should be the opening batsman for the Thunder, where he could take the game away from the Sixers quickly. Last season he hit sixes in three of his final four games, which is critical in the “Clear the Fence contest. Crucially, his short-form game has been good recently, scoring 81* and 97* in his last two T20 outings in the NSW district T20 competition.
Kurtis Patterson ($11,750)
Overall, Patterson’s form this season has been very good, even coming into consideration for the Australian Test team. While he is far more suited to the longer form of the game, including him in your squads for the first game of BBL|06 is a smart play, as he has been opening in practice matches for the Thunder. The 23-year-old is a relatively busy player and an opening partnership with Blizzard would balance the team nicely.
BOWLERS
Doug Bollinger ($12,100)
The Sixers will likely struggle due to the number of international representatives they have in their team, which leaves Bollinger as one of the team’s main bowlers. Despite only getting seven wickets in BBL|05, the 35-year-old looked dangerous and had a number of chances put down. He was excellent during the Matador Cup, and his ability to deliver with the white ball is a key reason as to why he is a great option.
Pat Cummins ($10,500)
This is as simple as it gets; Cummins is a very cheap option who needs to be locked into your teams. A genuine wicket-taker, Cummins excels in short-form cricket, and is fresh off dominating against New Zealand in the ODI series. He didn’t play at all in the last tournament due to injury, and him bowling four sharp overs and batting at eight could provide enormous value.
ALL-ROUNDER
Andre Russell ($28,250)
Spending over a quarter of your budget on one player is a big commitment, but there is arguably no better T20 player in the world than Andre Russell. Being cleared to play in the BBL, he comes in having performed well in the Bangladesh and Caribbean T20 competitions. Russell was a star performer in the Thunder’s successful BBL|05 campaign, and he has a huge role once again. His power hitting is a sight to behold, hitting 15 sixes last season – including five in one innings against the Scorchers. With the “Clear the Fence” contest in play, Russell is going to be everyone’s favourite player.
FLEX
Fawad Ahmed ($8,900)
Spending a lot on Russell doesn’t leave a lot of room for a star player in the flexible position, however there is value to be had with Ahmed. The leg-spinner’s spot in the team is still up in the air, but if he gets a gig, he should earn an economy rate bonus, on top of a wicket or two. He has been hard to get away in Premier Cricket this season, which should translate well into the BBL.
