VICE Sports: The most data rich sport on Earth

Data and statistics have become an integral part of the language of the AFL. Each year, statisticians crunch massive amounts of match data to help teams gain a competitive edge. An army of statisticians and technicians work in real-time to capture as many as 5,000 basic stats throughout each match. This wealth of information and data can then be mined by anyone from high level team executives, coaches and players, to the media, fantasy sports owners, or spectators to dissect the game they love.

In this episode of The Numbers Game, our deep dive into big data in sports, we explore the use of advanced data in the AFL and look at how new statistics are used to tell the story of the game.
