The Ultimate AFL Draftees Turbo Team

Ultimate AFL Draftees Turbo

The 2017 AFL Draft is arguably the most even crop ever. So much so, that there are still three players in serious contention to end up at Essendon as the number 1 pick.

We take a hypothetical look at what a Draftstars Turbo team would look like if the only players you could choose from were draftees, selected from the following criteria:

  • 3 Midfielders
  • 1 Key Forward
  • 1 Key Defender
  • 1 Ruckman

View the team below and get to know why these players make the cut.

Turbo Draftees

1. ANDY MCGRATH (MIDFIELDER)

Position: Midfielder/Defender

Height: 179cm

Weight: 75kg

DOB: 2/6/1998

McGrath’s elite pace is a key factor as to why he’s been widely tipped to be this year’s number one pick. Despite his lack of height, McGrath is a solidly built and gutsy midfielder. With GWS said to have traded up to pick two to enhance their chances of claiming him, his playing style is a mix of Jason Johannisen and Heath Shaw. End up at GWS and he could play a key role in their premiership ambitions next year.

2. HUGH MCCLUGGAGE (MIDFIELDER)

Position: Midfielder/Forward

Height: 185cm

Weight: 75kg

DOB: 3/3/1998

McCluggage has footy smarts, elite skills and the rare ability to impact the scoreboard from the midfield. Despite a limited pre-season this year, he was able to dominate at all levels. Playing only 12 games for North Ballarat in the TAC Cup, he still managed 25 goals and claimed the Morrish Medal for the league’s best and fairest. McCluggage still has some size to add to his frame, but his silky skill set will make it very hard for him to be overlooked for senior footy early in season 2017.

3. WILL SETTERFIELD (MIDFIELDER)

Position: Midfielder

Height: 190cm

Weight: 80kg

DOB: 5/2/1998

The GWS Academy prospect has attracted interest from several clubs at the top of the draft board, but expect the Giants to match any bid. Setterfield is a tall, mobile midfielder with clean skills, which have seen him touted as a top three pick in an open draft pool. Lachie Whitfield’s ban will only enhance his chances of slotting in to the GWS midfield early next season if that’s where he ends up.

4. TODD MARSHALL (FORWARD)

Position: Key Forward

Height: 198cm

Weight: 87kg

DOB: 8/10/1998

Marshall is considered by many as the best key forward prospect in this year’s draft. Modelling his game on powerful tall forwards such as Tom Lynch, Marshall could be a dominant force in any club’s forward line for a long time to come.

5. GRIFFIN LOGUE (DEFENDER)

Position: Key Defender

Height: 194cm

Weight: 92kg

DOB: 13/4/1998

The standout key defender in this year’s draft crop, Logue dominated testing at the draft combine. With an outstanding intercept mark, all-round athleticism and ready-built body, he could be a revelation in season 2017.

6. TIM ENGLISH (RUCK)

Position: Ruckman

Height: 204cm

Weight: 86kg

DOB: 10/8/1997

English is a genuine ruckman but is also able to collect disposals and use the ball efficiently all around the ground. With a bit more body size, the 204cm West Australian will have the ability to mix it with the elite ruckmen of the competition in the future.
