AFL THURSDAY $40,000+ LIONS v MAGPIES

With so many DFS studs in this game coaches will have to take plenty of calculated risk at selection.

The risk starts at the ruck with an excellent four-choice conundrum for coaches. We’re not paying up for Grundy here (see below) but those that do will get him at great ownership and his ceiling could take you all the way to the big dollars.

A balanced build looks the play tonight with plenty of players that first appear like good pay-downs sporting stupidly low floors – relying on 2-3 140+ scores tonight might leave you out of the cash altogether.

And to put some added pressure on this side, we are 4/4 ITM on Thursday Night Footy for 2019 including a couple of top 100’s.

Here is my team you can consider using, or building around, for the Lions v Magpies $40k Contest

FORWARD

Allen Christensen ($10,680):A first-up 74pts last round in a game where the Lions didn’t link up with forwards well shows there is potentially some value going to Christensen here second up. He is a senior player in that forward line now and I expect high work rate. 80-90pts is on offer here.

Travis Varcoe ($8,010):Benefited greatly from Mayne’s injury last week with 20 disposals on his way to 88pts. Not expecting that here but the Magpies must win this game which means Varcoe pressure will be at fever pitch. Banking a 20-30pt tackle floor for an 8k player is solid in this contest where so much salary is needed in the midfield. Would love a 60+ game but even if he returns us 50pts he hasn’t killed the team at that price.

MIDFIELD

Steele Sidebottom ($14,260):So overdue it’s hilarious that his pricetag remains so high given what he has (or has not) produced in 2019 so far. With Beams into the side it may be that there simply is not enough points to go around for Sidey, but we’re giving him one more go here at what i’m hoping will be good sub 20% ownership. Pretty safe 90pt floor.

Jarrod Berry ($12,460):Speaking of safe floors, Berry gets that tick averaging 91pts from his 4 games this season. Neale is hogging a bit of his ceiling but Berry is capable of an 80-90pt game here. Likely a popular choice but it’s warranted at that salary.

James Aish ($10,020):Love a good narrative but i’m picking Aish on form/role/opportunity bump more than the narrative of a high draft pick who left the Lions returning in (finally) good form and confidence. With Mayne absent it will open opportunities for Aish to rack up a few mark/kick stats out of defence. Disregard the last-start 46pts and assess on three starts prior. That 75-95pt range is solid at his price.

Hugh McCluggage ($11,970):Neale is also capping McCluggage’s output but I’m going back to him here at a great price for a player who can return a 75-95pt game.

DEFENDERS

Jack Crisp ($12,590):This is where we’ve really spent up. Love Crisp in most games for his ceiling but in this game he could put 50pts on the near defender if things fall his way. Should get a really soft matchup too. This is the ‘take us to the top’ selection.

Daniel Rich ($11,190): Nice and safe, Rich has averaged over 24 disposals in four games. That’s 65-70pts before he takes a mark or lays a tackle.

RUCK

Mason Cox ($8,530):Paying right down in the ruck tonight. Fading Grundy scares the Carlton Blues out of me but he has only manages to average 100pts (high of 111pts) in his last four games against the Lions which tells me Martin negates his super-high ceiling well enough. Cox only needs to kick two goals, lay two tackles and get 10-15 hitouts and its a great value game at his price.
