Looking to bolster your own line-up? Here’s a few best buys to consider.

Defenders

Sam Docherty – Carlton – $16,850

Docherty picks himself in Draftstars this week despite his lofty price tag. Scoring at least 90 points in each of his previous five games at the MCG, he boasts an average of 109 points – ranked second at the club behind Marc Murphy. Docherty has scored 149 and 143 points respectively from his past two games.

Heath Shaw – Greater Western Sydney – $13,300

Despite struggling for consistency all season, backing Shaw in his milestone 250th AFL match could be masterstroke. He has been a solid contributor interstate all season, averaging 23 disposals, seven marks, two tackles and 90 points. Shaw scored 98 points in his most recent interstate trip.

Jack Newnes – St Kilda – $13,900

Newnes has been a prolific scorer against sides outside the top eight this season, averaging 106 points from his six full games. This includes scoring 110+ in three of these, recording a season-high of 143 against the Bulldogs in Round 10. Newnes has scored 105 and 87 points from his past two games against this round’s opponent Gold Coast.

Midfielders

Patrick Dangerfield – Geelong Cats – $17,000

Dangerfield returns to Simonds Stadium on Sunday, a venue he has dominated at as a Geelong player, averaging a team-high 125 points from 11 games. This makes him a must have in Draftstars this week, especially after scoring 156, 125 and 131 points at the venue already this year.

Gary Ablett – Gold Coast Suns – $16,900

Ablett will be looking to emulate his previous match against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium from 2014. In that match he was exceptional, finishing with 37 disposals, four goals, four tackles and 127 points. The added appeal of his 300th AFL game will hopefully propel Ablett to similar heights on Sunday.

Marc Murphy – Carlton – $14,650

Only Tom Mitchell has averaged more points at the MCG this season than Murphy of anyone to play at least three games at the venue. He started the season with a 139-point haul against this round’s opponents Richmond, courtesy of his 35 disposals – his second-highest tally against the Tigers on record. He’s a safe choice in Draftstars.

Forwards

Lance Franklin – Sydney Swans – $13,400

Sydney’s reliance on Franklin always has him in the mix for selection in Draftstars. He has recorded 23% of the Swans’ scoring shots this season, the second-highest percentage of any player in the league. A career average of 4.9 goals against Essendon adds even more to his Draftstars appeal this round.

Midfielder/Forwards

Isaac Heeney – Sydney Swans – $14,050

Heeney’s last three games at the SCG have been solid, scoring 102, 93 and 113 points in that order. He is thriving in his new role as a mid-forward, ranking third at the club for centre bounce attendances since returning to the side in Round 5. Heeney played a key role in Sydney’s resurgence last round, scoring 66 of 109 points after half time.

Dom Sheed – West Coast Eagles – $12,750

Sheed is West Coast’s top scorer across its past two games – racking up 126 and 112 points respectively. With the exception of a poor score in his first match at Domain Stadium in Round 2 – he has averaged 103 points since. A home clash against Melbourne this round makes him a super buy.

Rucks

Brodie Grundy – Collingwood – $15,550

Grundy will be looking to pick up from where he left off prior to the bye where he amassed a career-high 158 points. He won’t have it all his own way in the ruck against Patrick Ryder, but he should make up for that with his ability to get involved around the ground, averaging the second-most disposals of any ruckman (18.4).
