Racing fans: it’s finally here!
Draftstars, Australia’s leading Daily Fantasy Sports site now offers horse racing contests where you can put your betting skills to the test against other punters.
It’s simple to enter – choose 1 horse from each race from the contest race meet, and the scoring is based on the tote prices. If you back a horse that wins at $20 odds for the win and $5 odds for the place, you get 25 points to your total. If they just run a place at $5 odds then you get 5 points to your total. Easy-peasy.
This leads to some interesting strategies – do you play it safe and take the favourites to lock in a pick more likely to score points for you, or do you swing for the fences and back some long shots?

The honour of being the first ever Draftstars horse racing contest winner goes to the user helpme, who after a slow start, with 3 straight picks that didn’t win or place, started to fire up in a big way.
Over the last 5 races at Sandown, he picked 3 winners and 1 place, with the winners all paying double figures in points, and Honey Esprit paying a whopping 41.20 points! (Imagine having $100 EW on that one!?)
This is how the winning player scored throughout the contest, you’d be kicking yourself after the slow start, and that’s the thing about horse racing, anything can happen in a given race – a favourite can get rolled and a longshot gets up and suddenly you’re back in it with a chance.
Rounding out the top 5 in the inaugural contest were: Broady4_, Deatac, Bongo646 and KNUCKLEHEAD, all taking home a substantial win off their $15 investment:
And for the rest of the entrants, there was decent money to be made – you can enter up to 50 times! so if you’re confident on your picks you can enter them more and lock in a bigger return. Even those that placed as far down as 386th in the comp made a profit on their $15 entry, taking home around $24 in tournament winnings.
It adds a bit of fun and excitement to the day’s races, with a shot at taking home some major prize money!
